Maintaining Virtual Areas on FPGAs using Strip Packing with Delays

چکیده
The computing resources available on dynamically partially reconfigurable devices increase every year enormously. In the near future, we expect that many applications run on a single reconfigurable device. In this paper, we present a concept for multitasking on dynamically partially reconfigurable systems called virtual area management. We explain its advantages, show its challenges, and discuss possible solutions. Furthermore, we investigate one problem in more detail: Packing modules with time-varying resource requests. This problem from the reconfigurable computing field results in a completely new optimization problem not tackled before. ILP-based and heuristic approaches are compared in an experimental study and the drawbacks and benefits discussed.

Strip Packing vs. Bin Packing
In this paper we establish a general algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which we achieve the same asymptotic bounds by applying bin packing algorithms to strip packing. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any offline bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. Thus using FFD (MFFD) as a su...
متن کاملA new metaheuristic genetic-based placement algorithm for 2D strip packing
Given a container of fixed width, infinite height and a set of rectangular block, the 2D-strip packing problem consists of orthogonally placing all the rectangles such that the height is minimized. The position is subject to confinement of no overlapping of blocks. The problem is a complex NP-hard combinatorial optimization, thus a heuristic based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it. I...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Exact Algorithms for the Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem
In this paper we consider a two dimensional strip packing problem. The problem consists of packing a set of rectangular items in one strip of width W and infinite height. They must be packed without overlapping, parallel to the edge of the strip and we assume that the items are oriented, i.e. they cannot be rotated. To solve this problem, we use three exact methods: a branch and bound method, a...
متن کاملA Parallel Hyper-heuristic Approach for the Two-dimensional Rectangular Strip-packing Problem
In this paper, we present a parallel hyper-heuristic approach for two-dimensional rectangular strip-packing problems (2DSP). This is an island model with a special master-slave structure, and in all the islands we run a memetic algorithm-based hyper-heuristic (HH). The basic technique of this HH is a memory-based evolutionary technique, the “extended virtual loser” (EVL). The memory-based techn...
متن کاملA Strip Packing Solving Method Using an Incremental Move Based on Maximal Holes
When handling 2D packing problems, numerous incomplete and complete algorithms maintain a so-called bottom-left (BL) property: no rectangle placed in a container can be moved more left or bottom. While it is easy to make a rectangle BL when it is added in a container, it is more expensive to maintain all the placed pieces BL when a rectangle is removed. This prevents researchers from designing ...
